Northern Province - Ellisras |
|
In the north-western bushveld of Northern Province, close to the Limpopo River. This pleasant town lies among the north western foothills of the Waterberg range, its principal claims notability the world's largest dry-cooled power station and South Africa's largest open-cast coal mine. It also has an excellent golf course. Ellisras is rather remote, though comfortably accessible from both the N1 national highway to the east and Thabazimbi to the south. Its tourist attractions lie in the area's sunny, equable climate, its clear skies, and the wildlife of what has until recently been a rather neglected region. In past, before the farmers and ranchers moved in, the Waterberg district supported great numbers of wild game; today much of the land is reverting to something like its original character as some of the larger properties are being converted to private game areas. These are perhaps less pristine in character than those of the eastern Lowveld, where there are coherent habitats in which predator-prey relationships determine the natural balance. Nevertheless the properties rank among the country's more rewarding game-viewing (and hunting) venues. Attractions Industrial Tours Both the Matimba Power Station and the Iscor Grootegluk Open-Cast Mine welcome visitors. Wildlife Abundant opportunities for game-viewing, hunting and bird-watching. Highlights is the D'Nyala Nature Reserve. Hiking trails, notably the Spreeuwal, offer a more intimate African experience. Bushman Rock Art is displayed in a number of caves in the area. Nearest towns Thabazimbi lies to the south; Nylstroom, Potgietersrus/Mokopane and Pietersburg/Polekwane are on the N1 highway to the east. |
