KZN - Sodwana Bay |
|
On the KwaZulu-Natal seaboard; part of the Greater St Lucia wetlands park. Sodwana Bay is both a park (run by the KwaZulu-Natal Nature Conservation service) and, in the holiday season, a popular leisure area, host to large numbers of summer vacationers who come for the beaches, the watersports, the boating and, most notably, the fine sea-angling off the tropical shores (catches include tuna, sailfish, blue and black marlin). The bay's waters, sheltered by both headland and reef; are blue and clear; the lakelets and marshes of the hinterland are home to game animals - mainly antelope and the smaller mammals - and to an attractive variety of birds. Giant leatherback and loggerhead sea turtles come ashore on summer nights to lay their eggs on the sandy stretches; Sodwana's beautiful offshore coral reefs, the world's southernmost, draw underwater explorers - scuba-divers and snorkellers - from afar. Accommodation and other facilities are available at St Lucia Estuary (to the south), in various rest-camps scattered about the wider St Lucia Wetlands Park, and at Sodwana Bay. The latter include log cabins, campsites, a supermarket and community centre. St Lucia Estuary; Mtubatuba; Richards Bay; Empangeni. |
