Eastern Province - Great Fishriver Conserv.

Location

Eastern Cape, 35 kilometres north-east of Grahamstown, off the road to Fort Beaufort.

This ‘new' protected wilderness is in fact a combination of three established reserves that, together, cover about 45,000 hectares of rugged hills, valleys, cliff-faced river gorges and dense, thorny, head-high, semi-succulent scrubland known technically as Fish River Valley Bushveld. Rather special is the euphoria ‘forest'; the aloes are striking, the landscapes wild and wonderful. The three sections were named Double Drift game reserve, Sam Knott nature reserve and Andries Vosloo kudu reserve.

Wildlife includes kudu, eland, springbok and other antelope; black rhino, Cape buffalo, giraffe, hippo, Burchell's zebra, chacma baboon and vervet monkey, elusive leopard, black-backed jackal and the intriguing Cape clawless otter. Some of these are introduced species. About 200 different kind of bird have been recorded in the area, among them some splendid raptors (black, fish and martial eagles).
